Hooked on Fencing is coached by a group of dedicated coaches. Each of our coaches brings a unique personality and skill set to the sport, but all are committed to bringing out the best in our fencers. At HoF, we believe that every fencer deserves coaches who will partner with them on their fencing journey, and enable them with the skills they need to succeed.
Founder, head coach and most accomplished fencer at Hooked on Fencing. Walt began fencing in high school in 1972 and competed nationally and internationally until 1983. After a 14 year layoff, he returned to the sport in 1997 for fun and fitness. He is the 2006 National Champion in Veteran 40-49 Men's Epee and holds an 'A' rating. After earning silver and bronze medals at the Veterans World Championships in 2007 and 2008, Walt become the World Champion in 2009. Walt says, "contrary to popular opinion, fencing to me is not about the winning, but about trying to be better today then yesterday."
Holds the title of Fencing Master, the highest rank among fencing coaches. In college, Jim fenced for Cleveland State University and was the captain of the fencing team in 1975 as well as the CSU Scholar Athlete of that same year. As a member of the Australian National Team, he fenced in the 1979 World Championships. He coached at Cornell University from 1980-85 before moving to Australia to fill the position of National Fencing Team coach from 1986 until 1990. After moving back to the U.S. in 2010, Jim began coaching at Hooked on Fencing in order to continue sharing his love of the sport.
Ionut (Johnny) Ana
Hooked on Fencing's armorer, web administrator and operations manager. In addition to running the important day-to-day aspects of the club, Johnny also competes and coaches. Johnny is an 'A' rated, nationally ranked fencer.
Nick has been fencing at Hooked on Fencing since 2004. After leading the Miami University Fencing Club from 2010-2012, Nick join Hooked on Fencing as a coach in 2012. Nick is an 'A' rated, nationally ranked fencer.
