January NAC Results

First off, congratulations to Michelle Schultz who earned a silver medal in Women's Vet 50 Epee at the January North American Cup in Louisville, Kentucky. Michelle finished second in a field of 32 fencers from all over the United States and Canada! You can view the results for yourself right here . Congrats, Michelle!

Upcoming Tournaments

Tournament season is fully upon us, and there are many upcoming opportunities to compete. For our newer fencers, it's important to understand how this process works and how to get involved. First, it's your responsibility to plan your tournament schedule, sign up for tournaments in advance, and arrive at tournaments fully prepared and on time. We are always happy to assist with advice on what is needed and which tournaments to attend, so feel free to send an email or ask at the club. Here is a brief checklist of what you need to do:

  1. Browse tournaments and sign up in advance. You can always find a list of upcoming tournaments on the left side of these emails, so that's a good place to start. You can also search for local tournaments on AskFRED.net , or regional tournaments at USAFencing.org . It's important to sign up for tournaments well in advance. Some tournaments have registration deadlines, but even if they don't, this helps attract more fencers and grow the event, which provides more opportunities and fun for all. It's especially important to sign up early for tournaments at our own club.
  2. Make sure your USA Fencing membership is current. Local tournaments require, at minimum, an Access Membership, while regional events require the full Competitive Membership. These memberships are good for the whole 2022/23 season and can be found right here .
  3. Make sure you have all of your tournament equipment. That means mask, jacket, glove, underarm protector, chest protector (women only), knickers, long socks, and at least 2 epees and 2 body cords. Some of this equipment can potentially be borrowed from the club; for example, we have a lending library where sets of competition weapons and body cords can be rented for $15 per tournament. For tournaments at HoF, equipment can be borrowed for free, but make sure you show up early and get everything you need in plenty of time. Speaking of which...
  4. Show up to tournaments on time and ready to compete! The general rule of thumb is that you should show up to tournaments an hour before the posted start time, especially for tournaments outside of HoF. This will give you plenty of time to find the venue, potentially wait in line to register and have your equipment checked, and prepare for fencing by stretching, warming up, and fencing a bit before the event starts.

I'm excited to help new fencers enter competition and improve their fencing game! As always, feel free to email or stop in with any questions, and check out the links above to plan your Winter/Spring competition schedule. Don't forget to sign up for our Unrated + Youth Event THIS Saturday, January 21. See you there!
