Upcoming Tournaments

This is an archived newsletter from September 23, 2021. Dates, prices and deadlines in it have passed — see current classes or the schedule.
The next tournament on the horizon is the annual Escrime d'Halloween ! This is a local event (Lakewood) and a perfect place for a first tournament. The categories here are Y10, Y12, Y14, and Cadet (16 and under). If you are interested in fencing at this event, the deadline to register is September 30th. If you want to fence, here are the steps you need to take.
- Make sure you have a current competitive membership through USA Fencing. You can find the membership page here . A competitive membership runs $85 per year, and expires on August 1, 2022. This gives you access to all tournaments during that period.
- Make sure you own a full set of tournament equipment. You can purchase gear through the club, and the good news is that most bits of equipment will last a long time. You need to own a mask, jacket, glove (with no holes), knickers, an underarm protector, a chest protector (ladies only), and long socks. You should also obtain, at some point, your own epees/body cords--however, these can be rented from the club at the cost of $15 per set (1 epee and 1 body cord per set). At tournaments, you are required to have at least 2 weapons and 2 body cords.
- Register for the tournament itself. As I mentioned, the deadline to sign up is September 30th, and you can do so here . If you are not sure which events are right for you, feel free to email or discuss at the club.
I will be at this event to coach, and several of our fencers will be fencing their first event ever! If you want get started too, take a look at the steps above and ask questions if you have them! I'd love to see as many fencers as possible have fun with local competitions!
Other Tournaments
There are many more tournaments available! As always, feel free to browse AskFRED or USA Fencing , and always check out the left side of these emails for more links. In the near future, I will be setting up a tournament calendar at the club where fencing can be reminded of upcoming events. Also, make sure you sign up for our own events, which include a D and Under on October 23 , an Open on 11/28 , and an Unrated + Unsanctioned Youth Events on December 5.
Outstanding Equipment Bills
One other thing--as part of our slow return to normalcy, we have been going through some older, unpaid equipment bills. So, a few of you might receive these in the near future. Thanks in advance for helping us stay on track with our books!
