Outbreak of mumps in Ohio

There is an outbreak of mumps in Ohio that has reached HoF, coach Nick was diagnosed with it this morning. Too be safe we are informing everyone to be on the lookout for it.

What is mumps & how it spreads

Mumps is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the parotid glands. Parotid glands help to make saliva (spit). They are located in front of and below each ear. The mumps virus is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is also spread through direct contact, such as sharing cups or toys.

Symptoms

Up to half of people who get mumps have very mild or no symptoms, and therefore do not know they were infected with mumps.

The most common symptoms include:

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Tiredness
• Loss of appetite
• Swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides (parotitis)

Symptoms typically appear 16-18 days after infection, but this period can range from 12-25 days after infection.

Vaccination against mumps

Most of the children in USA have been vaccinated against the mumps through the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella). If you have not been vaccinated, it is recommended that you do get the MMR vaccine

Stay home and see a doctor if:

You are coughing or sneezing, have a fever, if you have swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears.
